Plastic Surgeon

Plastic surgeons perform operations that change the shape or appearance of part of a patient's body. They not only perform cosmetic surgeries such as nose jobs or face lifts, but they also perform reconstructive surgeries for patients who have injuries from a car crash or other accident or for those with birth defects.

Plastic surgeons perform operations that change the shape or appearance of part of a patient's body. They not only perform cosmetic surgeries such as nose jobs or face lifts, but they also perform reconstructive surgeries for patients who have injuries from a car crash or other accident or for those with birth defects.

Plastic Surgery

The specific procedures a plastic surgeon performs depend on his specialty. For example, cosmetic surgeons may perform breast augmentations or liposuction. Craniomaxillofacial surgeons treat conditions in the face and head such as cleft palate. Burn surgeons remove dead flesh, graft new skin and work to minimize scarring on burn victims.

Consultations

Regardless of their specialty, all plastic surgeons have consultations with patients. The doctor must communicate with the patient to determine the desired outcome of the surgery and to explain the possible risks and side effects of surgical procedures. Plastic surgeons working in emergency medicine or with burn victims may work on patients who are unconscious or unable to communicate. In these cases, surgeons often communicate with the patient's family to determine the best course of treatment.

Surgical Preparation

Doctors may need to perform tests prior to the surgery. For example, X-rays are needed on an accident victim to perform reconstructive surgery. Surgeons may also mark incision lines on patients prior to surgery. In addition, doctors must ensure patients are in good enough health to undergo surgery and anesthesia.

Education and Certification

Plastic surgeons must maintain their license to practice medicine. This involves completing continuing education credits and staying current on new surgical techniques and advances. Specific continuing education requirements vary by state.

Other Considerations

Physicians and surgeons earned a median annual salary of $204,950 in 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the low end, physicians and surgeons earned a 25th percentile salary of $131,980, meaning 75 percent earned more than this amount. The 75th percentile salary is $261,170, meaning 25 percent earn more. In 2016, 713,800 people were employed in the U.S. as physicians and surgeons.

What is the difference between a Dermatologist and a Plastic Surgeon?

Dermatologists and plastic surgeons do, in fact, treat many of the same disorders. However, while both practitioners perform liposuction and cosmetic repairs on skin damaged by age, disease, or overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the disciplines are different in their focus.

Doctors of dermatology deal with non-life-threatening illnesses such as chronic acne and also with cancers, autoimmune disorders, and sexually transmitted diseases. They focus primarily on conditions of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. While they frequently perform surgeries, they treat many patients by means of drugs, medications, and other non-surgical therapies.

Plastic surgeons offer optional cosmetic procedures including breast enlargement and liposuction, but they are more likely to perform significant restorative and reconstructive surgeries to treat burns, correct birth defects, or repair injuries to the face or extremities.
